Day Four

Once again, our day here in Mobile has been an exciting one. We’ve formed some great new friendships with students from other churches that we share a ministry site with. We’ve also gotten to know some of the individuals we are served this week better as we spend more time with them. The Lord has blessed us so far with great weather (ie, no rain, but it’s still HOT!), which is a blessing since several of the teams the students are on spend a good majority of their time at the site outside. The bond between the students from Live Oak has just been an absolutely blessing to watch this week. Every student is being encouraged by another student in the group, and we all just have a great time hanging out together.

Our theme today was on sacrifice. The story of Hannah in 1 Samuel really drove home the point that God calls us to sacrifice anything and everything for Him. In doing so, it gives a clear view of where the priorities of a believer really lie. Romans 12:1 talks about the concept of offering up our bodies as “a living sacrifice.” The speaker for tonight really hit on a good idea when he mentioned that Christ gave Himself wholly, so we are to give ourselves wholly to Him and to sacrifice whatever it takes to make that happen.

Thank you for your prayers these past few days, and I ask that you continue lifting us up before the Lord. Pray that tomorrow (our last full day of camp and the last day at our ministry site) would be filled with opportunities to present the gospel to the people we meet. Pray that the attitudes and energy of the students would be as fresh in the morning as they were when we first got here to mFuge. And pray that God would really break through the hearts of some of the students who desperately need to make either a commitment to Him for the first time or a rededication of their lives to Him.

Day Three

Our second full day at camp has gone really well. Each of our teams had a great day at their ministry sites. Today was also our extended free time from 3:00 to 9:00pm. We headed to Chickasabouge Park not far from the university campus. It was a really relaxed time as the students had time to swim in the creek, play volleyball, and just hang out together. We grilled burgers on the outdoor grill at the pavilion. It was a way just to settle down and take a breather from the busy week we’ve had so far.

The theme for the day has been obedience. Each of the Bible study times and the worship service this evening has focused on this essential characteristic in following God’s will. The speaker for the tonight pointed out that, at the very middle of the word “obedience” is the word “die”. To obey the Lord is to die to our own will and our own desires. We studied and saw obedience lived out in the lives of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Pray that we would grasp onto the Bible study material and it would compel us to draw closer to the Lord. Pray that we would be strengthened to accomplish all that God has set out for us this week. Lift up those to whom we are ministering these next few days, that the needs we meet for them would not just be physical, but spiritual as well.

Day Two

Today was our first full day of mFuge. It was also the first day on the various ministry sites that our group has been split into. Some of us participated in summer camps at local children’s ministry locations. Others worked at nursing homes in the community or local rec centers. Tonight’s after-worship activity was a county fair. Students participated in fair-type games to earn points for their Bible study group. Everything about mFuge so far has been a blast!

The theme for the day was the characteristic of love. The Bible study incorporated the story of Jonah into the today’s theme. Interestingly, it was not Jonah that we focused on, but rather the love of God for every person. Romans 8 tells us that nothing can separate us from the love God has for us, the love that He has so abundantly poured out onto His people. It reminds us that, as we go to our sites each day, we are to reflect that love from the Father on those kids and adults with whom we come in contact. We are to see them as God sees them, as lost people in need of the Way.

Pray for safety for our group in all of the mission projects throughout the week. Continue to lift our students up to the Lord as they will all be presented with numerous chances to share Christ both verbally and nonverbally. Some mentioned during our church group time tonight that God had placed on their heart a specific individual at their site. We are praying that He does so with every member of our student group here. Pray also for an additional measure of patience for us all, as the hot days and long hours will begin to wear thin on us as the week continues.

Day One

As I type this, the time is approximately 1am in Live Oak. It has been a long day that started early, but praise the Lord, we made it here to camp and have had a great opening night of mFuge activities.

We left around 9am this morning from the church and made it to Crestview, FL, before we stopped for lunch. After about an hour to eat, we piled back in the bus and continued our trek down I-10. We crossed the bridge into Mobile a little after 2pm (central time), exactly according to plan. As we arrived at the college campus, some construction at the front gate made it necessary to drive on past the entrance and turn around. As we made the U-turn in a circular driveway, the bus bottomed out on the incline of the pavement. After a couple of solutions proved futile, the Lord provided us with a tow truck driver to help pull the bus from the driveway.

Throughout the night, my mind has been circulating with different thoughts and questions, all centering around that one instance we found ourselves in this afternoon. I do believe that the holdup was an attempt from the devil to distract us from what the Lord is going to do this week. The question that I kept asking was, what was Satan’s purpose in using this particular attack?

Obviously, it was not his attempt to keep us from getting to camp. Let me assure you that we were never in any danger whatsoever; our drivers continuously exhibited the best judgment throughout our trip. And we were just a few blocks from the campus, so we could have walked to camp if it had been necessary to do so while the bus was being worked on.

I believe the attack came to hit us in some place we weren’t expecting: our excitement and morale. Having just past the entrance to the camp and sensing the electricity of the students as they anticipated what this week would be like, Satan’s plan was to wipe away that feeling of excitement. He couldn’t keep us from getting to camp, but he wanted to steal our zeal. He wanted to take from our students the excitement that I had sensed in every “Are we there yet?” Was he successful? Absolutely not! Our group is even more on fire for what God will do this week, and the passion to see Him work within us is evident.

Tonight was the opening celebration and ministry assignments for the week. Our group was split several ways as they filled teams going out into the community of Mobile to serve with kids, or do construction, or conduct sports camps. Later on, we came back together as a church group to talk about the day and what was in store for us this week.

Continue to be in prayer for us, that God would not allow anything Satan throws our way to detract from the desire our group has to see Him move in a mighty and powerful way. I can sense even through our short day and night here so far that there are some tremendous things in store for each student and for our group as a whole. Pray for strength for us on our first day of site projects. Many of us are having to step outside of our comfort zones to serve Him this week. And also pray that God would be exalted in the life of every student and adult on this campus this week, whether they hail from Live Oak or not.
